who_contest. Based on this prompt from tumblr: I just want an episode of Doctor Who where the TARDIS translator thing stops working. So when the Doctor goes to speak to his companion he automatically talks in Gallifreyan. So he then has to consciously change to English. And for the whole episode he just speaks with a stupid accent. [ Link ]
Summary: As in prompt - "The Doctor sighed and more sounds came out. Rose imagined he'd be saying I'm making perfect sense you're just not keeping up in his usual too sassy tone."
Warning/Spoilers: None for Doctor Who. Unbeta'd. Terrible writing skills.
"6 billion languages!" Rose gushed. "Imagine that," she sighed.
"Imagine the Doctor speaking Russian," Mickey replied with a laugh.
"Yeah," Rose laughed and then sighed as she realised, "but all I hear is English. The TARDIS does that y'know. Just think all this time the Doctor could have been speaking Russian or something and I wouldn't even know."
Back in the TARDIS Rose found the Doctor on the floor. Nothing unusual about that. What followed next though was very strange indeed.
"Ah, Rose," smiled the Doctor. And then proceeded to talk in a language she couldn't understand. Phonics and sounds just poured from his mouth and all rose could do was blink at him.
"What?" She asked face screwed. "You're not making any sense."
The Doctor sighed and more sounds came out. Rose imagined he'd be saying I'm making perfect sense you're just not keeping up in his usual too sassy tone. She'd laugh if it wasn't so confusing. She'd been on to Mickey about this that morning. What if the Doctor had heard and was playing a trick.
"Stop it," she cried. "I don't know. . . " She trailed off.
The Doctor held up his sonic screwdriver and pointed to parts of the TARDIS. Rose tried to understand. The Doctor pointed and mumbled a sound or two.
It went on like this with the Doctor trying to sign his way through an explanation and Rose blinking back at him trying to see an answer until the Doctor gave up and disappeared under the centre console.
"What are you doing?" Rose asked trying to see over his shoulder. She realised she couldn't understand a word and hoped she could try and work it out if she could see what he was doing.
The Doctor appeared moments later sonic screwdriver in his mouth. "Is that better?" he asked.
Rose almost jumped for joy. She hugged him.
"I take that as a yes," The Doctor smiled, hugging her back. "The translator stopped working-"
"You never speak in English?" Rose questioned.
"I've never had to," The Doctor admitted. He stroked his chin. "Thankfully, I managed to fix the. . ." The Doctor's words trailed off, becoming more like sounds again. His repairs were obviously not up to standard as his words turned back into phonics and sounds in an alien accent.
"Oh, damn it," the Doctor forced out in a terrible accent. It sounded like his usual Northern one but more forced. Rose didn't like it. "I'm going to have to fix that properly," The Doctor sounded out carefully. Forcing the words in his weird over pronounced accent.
Rose tired to suppress to giggle, "You better. That accent is awful."
The Doctor's mouth dropped in mock shock, but he laughed too.
