You can tell alot about a planet from it's air.
Spoilers/Warnings: Small for 5x04:The Time of Angels, I believe

The Doctor can tell a lot about any planet by its air. By its quality. The chemicals that make it up. The weather. The season. All sorts just from the air. He licks his finger and tastes the air. He spouts out all the information relevant and some that's not like the time or the year. All from the air. All from licking his finger and tasting the air.
River tells the Ponds that's all just a magic trick. Everything the Doctor is and does is magic though. He reads the TARDIS' initial survey of the plant, let's it sink in and spouts all after the greatest display of showmanship in the universe. Still it's impressive how much you can tell about a planet from its air.
