Summary: An old woman gets an unexpected visit.
Gillian Smith sat alone in her home. She was sick with a fever, and was looking at pictures of her brother John, who had passed away just a few days ago. She heard a knock on her door.
“I'm coming!” she said, taking out her walking stick and trundling to her door. She wondered whether this was that annoying mailman again. Opening the door, she saw a young round-faced woman and a grey-haired old man in a black suit. The man looked like he had never smiled in his life.
“Excuse me, who are you?” Gillian said. She had never seen either of these people before.
The woman opened her mouth to speak, but the man spoke before her: “I'm your Doctor, and also your grandfather.”
Gillian snorted. Was this some sort of cruel trick? “I haven't seen my grandfather--”
“In 50 years. And you were adopted, and you have a brother named John,” said the man.
Now Gillian was angered. “How dare you speak about John? Can't you leave the grief of a old woman out of your prank?”
The man looked confused. The woman grabbed him, and whispered in his ear. Then she smiled at Gillian, and said “By the way, I'm Clara, which HE forgot to mention.”
The man was silent, and his face fell, reminding Gillian of a puppy in pain. “John is de...” He paused, and looked like he was fighting back tears. Gillian automatically moved to comfort him, but he flinched and said “Never mind. Listen, your body is failing. Pesky thing about being human. You won't get to go anywhere in a few years, besides a coffin. So, if you want a chance for one more adventure, come with me.”
“What?!” said Gillian, shocked and disrespected.
“Was I too harsh?” said the man.
“Yes” said Clara quickly.
“This is a horrible joke,” said Gillian. She walked back into her house.
“Before you go,” said Clara. “We want to show you something.”
Gillian nearly closed the door on them, but went back outside despite her better judgment.
“It better be good” said Gillian.
Clara and the man took Gillian behind her house. Gillian looked out for someone with water balloon projectiles or some other prank.
Then she saw a familiar blue box. And then she peered at the insides.
Kleptons. Trods. Thousands of names and adventures long forgotten leapt to her mind.
“The TARD...” she said, staring at the immense insides. Tears fell on her face.
She turned back to the girl and the Doctor.
“So,” said her grandfather, “up for one final adventure?”
