Rating: PG-13
Genre: Grief, Angst
Word Count: 550 (!!)
Pairings or Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble

Summary: Donna's last few precious moments as the most important woman in the Universe...

“No, please, don’t! No, please!”

Her cries went unheeded. The world that had been bright and afire, now turned suddenly cold. The multitude of sounds seemed to be swelling and dipping in an unending melody of horror. Quiet, sad horror.

Please. She couldn’t articulate anymore. Sorrow and fear were drying her mouth, numbing her tongue. Her face was a wet soggy mess of tears, make-up and soot. He placed his hands on her head and she felt a shiver run through her entire self, as though he had electrocuted her.

No. She stared deep into his wet, sad eyes, pleading with him. Please, let him not do this. Please, she didn’t want to forget anything. All of it –all the people and the places and the stories, she didn’t want to forget any of it.

She didn’t want to forget him.

Then, a sharp jolt of pain seemed to stab through each of her temples, two jabs so excruciating her entire burning body stiffened up, her breath coming out in terrified heaves. It was as if the Doctor had inserted barbed scalpels into her brain.

Unbidden, one word floated up from her fiery mess of thoughts and ideas and knowledge.

Lobotomy.

So she stood frozen, helpless, as her best friend in the whole wide universe cut himself out of her life –lobotomized her. His two blades were proceeding systematically in her brain, cutting neurons, blocking synapses. The screaming image of Davros that had been seared onto her memory was now being scraped off; soon the mass murderer had receded into a tiny pinpoint in her mind, just an idea, an awareness. The memory of the bug on her back was snipped off so painfully, it was as if its pincers were in her brain…

She was in a spa, and the X-Tonic sunlight burnt away the Doctor’s face when he came back…

The Library –River Song, the Vashta Nerada were now eating themselves out of her brain, leaving behind darkness, even they couldn’t take her darkness…

Agatha Christie –she would remember her no more than the famous author would remember her…

Jenny –oh, Jenny, why her, why him? The pain that had sliced through her heart when Jenny died seemed to slice through her brain now…

Faster now –Martha, brilliant Martha, and then the Sontarans, whose ship she had sabotaged…The Ood, their hive mind, and suddenly she wished she had a brain that big… Pompeii, and the one family they did save… fat babies…

A giant, ancient spider was slicing through a cocoon of thick spider-silk, and her fiancé was falling into a pit that went down to the centre of the Earth…

…And she was in the Tardis, in a wedding dress, and the Doctor was staring at her as though he couldn’t believe his eyes…

Then he moved toward her, his face suddenly purposeful, something gleaming in his hands. Too late she saw the sword swing up, too late to even say anything, how she hated him for doing this to her, how she loved him because no one could be what he was to her –or just to scream at him to stop.

She only saw his despairing, wet eyes as the sword flashed in the calming blue light of the Tardis’ time rotor.

The blade cleaved her head in half and all was dark.
