Title: The Glorious Victory of Ulgargalan the Terrible
Rating: U
Genre: Gen
Word Count: Please include this
Pairings or Characters: The Doctor
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: A hostile alien has the Doctor exactly where he wants him.
"I see defiance in your eyes Doctor," Ulgargalan gave him a smug grin. "But you surely must understand there is nothing you can do." The tall alien gestured behind him, the large wall to ceiling window showed a planet of blue and orange. "They will die, all twenty three billions of them." Ugargalan had thick red scales all over his flesh. His limbs were thin, his body thick. "There is nothing you can do," he repeated. "It is..." he paused for grand dramatic effect, "impossible."
The Doctor said nothing.
"Yet despite defeat you look at me as if it is I who have lost!" Ulgargalan laughed, a hearty, whole body laugh. "It was a valiant effort I admit but you and I will watch as they perish and I prevail." He turned his back to The Doctor.
The Doctor said nothing.
"It is impossible for any other result."
"You keep saying that," the Time Lord said, wagging his finger.
Ulgargalan turned back to him, "So you have not lost speech."
"You keep saying impossible."
"It is impossible. I am victorious. It is impossible to save them, impossible to stop me, impossible to win."
"Yes like that, exactly like that, you keep using that word over and over," the Doctor slicked his hair back with his right hand. He was standing tall, his body language was pure confidence.
"Because it is impossible!"
"Well. Yes. It looks like that doesn't it." He straightened his bow-tie.
"It is," Ulgargalan insisted. But for the first time there was a trace, a hint, a slight, tiny little suggestion of a doubt. The Doctor seemed so completely sure of himself.
The Doctor smiled as if he had just made a beautiful chess move. "Is it?"
"I admire your courage Doctor, even now, but it's too late. Stopping me is impossible."
"Let me tell you," the Doctor spoke quietly and deliberately, "about impossible." He took a step forward. "Impossible is what the Daleks said before the Battle of Qzan. Impossible is what the third legion of the Cyber fleet said before the fall of Hellania. Impossible is what I do. Every day, every threat." He stepped forward another pace. "Impossible is what arrogant psychopaths say to assure themselves of their power. Impossible is just a word. So let me ask you, are you sure? Impossible?"
"Impossible," Ulgargalan nodded, but his certainty had further waned.
"Impossible. Just a word. It gets thrown about a lot. All it really means is 'I haven't thought of everything' or 'I don't believe' or 'I can't imagine'. That's what someone like you means when you say impossible." He took another step. "But me? When I hear impossible I think. I believe. I imagine. Do you know what happens when someone like you tells me something is impossible?"
"What?" Ulgargalan had to ask, through he didn't know quite why he was afraid of the answer.
"I make it possible." He smiled.
Ulgargalan gulped.
