Summary: Typical. It was just so bloody...typical.
Typical. It was just so bloody…typical.
Here he was: The Doctor. The Oncoming Storm. The Predator. Any number of names, aliases, whatever his foes had bestowed; it was all the same. Here was the one being in the universe who could strike fear into their darknesses that stood for hearts.
And how did they try to keep him at bay? Threaten a companion.
It was insulting, in a way. They hated, feared him so much. Given the circumstances, that was fair enough. But was this really the best way they could think of to stop him? Pathetic.
He could count on probably one hand the times that it had actually succeeded. Yet they never learned. They never seemed to catch on. They simply thought that they were exploiting a great weakness.
Idiots, the lot of them.
The one thing his enemies never realized was that the companions kept him going. Yes, he liked showing off for them; it was fun. It was beautiful to see the wonders of the universe through the eyes of humans; somehow, it made everything so fresh.
But that wasn’t the only reason he kept finding someone to travel with him. He needed something. Motivation. Fighting the good fight was never easy. But having the company of someone who trusted him implicitly…someone whose fragility made them all the more precious…
Companions, yes. But also inspiration.
That’s why it never failed to push him to greater deeds when a companion was in danger. Threatening a planet, that was one thing. He could rescue an entire solar system from the brink of destruction without stopping to draw a breath. It angered him, certainly; it always did. He cherished every breath of life the universe was capable of holding. Save an entire universe? Been there, done that, still not sure why there wasn’t a T-shirt to commemorate it.
But his enemies always got it so horribly, hopelessly wrong. His companions in danger made it a personal thing, unforgivable in the extreme. And everyone always came to the wrong conclusion:
The Doctor is being uncooperative. Let’s force his hand by threatening the lives of those he travels with.
It was childish, idiotic, and downright annoying. It also made him braver than he might otherwise feel the need to be.
