Title: Tender Is
Rating: PG
Genre: Romance, angst
Word Count:
Characters: River Song, Eleventh Doctor
Note: Due to the unique waythe BBC is fundedmy brain works, it associated "blur" with the band and then Tender got stuck.
Summary: Time can be rewritten, but words cannot be unsaid.
Time can be rewritten, but words cannot be unsaid.
“This was exactly you. All this. All of it.”
“It's insane. Worse, it's stupid. You embarrass me.”
Oh, how words can hurt the one we love the most. I think that's why, even were our timelines not running in opposite directions, I still wouldn't travel with him. I love him beyond all else, to the end of time and the universe, but living together? That would bring about both those things and infinitely worse.
So I spend my days in the Storm Cage. A pardon is coming – after all, how can one serve a sentence for murder when the man you killed isn't dead? – and the days can be tolerated when my nights are his. Tender nights where love heals the hurts we've caused. Where we lie beside one another and forget for a little while that time is crueller than any pain we can inflict. Sometimes I catch him watching him and there is a darkness in his eyes which reminds me he knows how things end.
I wonder what he sees in mine at times – there are things we must keep hidden from the other. Things that cannot be changed no matter how much we wish them to be. Spoilers.
But those thoughts are for the days. The times we are apart. The nights we spend together are no time for regrets or recriminations. There is no time whatsoever for anything other than love.
Through love comes forgiveness for everything else.
“And you are forgiven. Always and completely forgiven.”
“Whenever and wherever you want.”
Not all the time. Not the days.
But the tender is the night.
