What are the Doctor's nightmares exactly? Settling down?

"He said a nightmare. He said nightmare. A nightmare!" Rory kept repeating the word as if it was foreign to him.

"I know," Amy let out a giggle and sigh together.

"But it was the same dream. A dream!"

"The Doctor has been around for a while, seen a lot of things. His nightmares are probably like the rest of him- Y'know, out of this world." Amy reasoned, "You heard what he said, there's enough darkness in him."

"Yeah, in him. . ." Rory knew what he was trying to say, getting it out so Amy could understand was proving difficult. "But. . ."

Amy smiled at him and reached up to kiss his cheek, "He's seen a lot. His nightmares are probably darker than that pollen could ever pick up."

"Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. But he said it was a nightmare. Us being like. . . Well, normal."

"Perhaps he doesn't want to lose us. He said he couldn't be in his own company!"

Rory laughed a little, but the thought still played on his mind. The Doctor settling down? Was that really his ultimate nightmare? Travelling throughout time and space was something he was sure Amy could give up. How would the Doctor? How would the Doctor cope in "normal" life? That thought made Rory laugh a little.

The Doctor's horror story might be Rory's idea of heaven. You'd never know.

Nice insight, the last line sums it all up! I just love how very puzzled and affronted Rory seemed in the dialogue, your Amy voice was very nice too :) And she had a good point about both the darkness of the Doctor's nightmares, and his fearing to be alone. Nice job! :D

:D It does. That's what a conclusion should do; sum it all up!
Rory always seemed puzzled to me. Amy also always seems to dimiss Rory in her loving way.
I'm glad I nailed these two. I don't normally write them!

I know he mentioned it as Ten, but I'm not sure if Eleven's ever said how fearful he is of settling down. So I thought I'd have Rory kind of not deduce it - kind of question what the Doctor's nightmares are exactly.

This is lovely and more than a tad bittersweet. For all the humour behind this, it also displays a fundamental aspect of the Doctor: he is an alien and in trying to "suit" him, his companions could lose more than they can imagine - they'd never know indeed. I loved Amy's attitude towards Rory here, tender but dismissive, a little oblivious to what Rory is trying to say, always the Doctor's friend. Rory is sharpest. Really nice piece!

Rory notes that too. In one of the episodes he rants "It's not that you make people take risks, it's that you make them want to impress you"

Amy was like that to Rory during the first few episodes of this series. She dimissed him most of the time, and the poor man always felt like he was Amy's second choice. She's always the Doctor's friend, and Rory has some very valid points!

Yes, I was thinking of that moment as well. It's essentail to understanding Rory as a character.

I think Amy just tend to assimilate him at some point. For a while, it must have been Rory-Amy-Mels as an entity. And she was glad to have a friend who was only hers. Of course, it hurt Rory.

He grows a lot, bless him. He goes from being all aliens, yes, okay, cool, to growing and understanding. A lot of the Doctor's companions just accept it all. They show blind faith to him almost. Like Amy does here. . . She just sort of accepts the Doctor's lie to her, but Rory begins to question them. Yeah, I like this in him! :D
It must have really hurt Rory when the Doctor showed up. Like Amy's imaginery friend is real now!? And she runs away with him. I feel like crying for him now. . .
