“River!” said the Doctor, banging at the TARDIS door. “How dare you lock me in? I don't even know how you learned to do that...but how dare you, anyway!”
River, smirking, turned around and smiled at the Doctor's other wife . “Thanks for that. He would have gotten in the way.” She felt the biting air on her cheeks as she walked along a path filled with trees with a road that had long been forgotten. Her eyes roved across the grass, looking for one specific person. She prayed she hadn't stopped at the wrong time; there was only one shot at this...
A familiar sobbing sound came to River's ears.. Turning the corner, she found the little girl she was looking for.
Dressed in all black, the girl was hacking at wood. When she saw River, she jumped back and brandished her knife. “Stay back!”
In her mind, River couldn't help but see all the ways she could disarm the little girl. Assassins' habits die hard. She ignored all of them. Instead, she studied the girl's face. The girl had clearly been crying just before now. “Is everything alright?” River said, smiling.
“Yeah, I'm fine. Now leave!” said the girl. River didn't move an inch. After a while, when it became clear neither were going to budge, the girl said “Well, there is a small problem. My...teddy bear is stuck in a tree.”
A little girl complaining about a teddy bear while pointing a knife at her nearly made River both laugh and cry. She did neither. “That sounds horrible.”
The girl glared at her, though she did put her knife down. “.Madame K—I mean, my caretaker says I'm not supposed to play with toys, cuz I need to be strong. But I do it anyway, and if I ask someone to bring it down, then she'll punish me...so I'll never get my teddy again...” At that point, tears began to fall on the little girl's face.
River immediately hugged the girl with one hand. With the other, she fished out a sonic device, and taking great care not to hit the bear, broke the branch that the bear was stuck on.
The little girl stared in shock. Letting go of the girl for a moment, River inspected the bear. A little dirty, and a few tears here and there, but in basically good condition.
The girl, however, looked like someone had given her the world. . “Thank you! But...why? You don't even know me!”said the girl.
“When I lost my bear , no one got it down for me. And despite my tears, no one around cared or comforted me. They said loss would make me stronger.” River let out a long sigh. “I've had a lot of losses and pain. Things that, in reality, were probably worse. But that bear always stuck with me. So I saw you, and I decided to make sure you didn't go through that.” River could already feel the headache that came from slight changes to the time line. The Doctor would be mad, but this small change was worth it.
“Thank you again, What's your n--?” started the little girl. But River Song had already left.
