“Do-wee-ooooooooo!”
“Shh!”
“Do-weee-”
“Shut up, Amy!”
Amy was doubled over in laughter.
“I don’t see wha’s funn-nny.”
“’S the Doctor’s box,” Amy wheezed through her giggles. “Tha’s the sound it makes.”
“No, it does no-”
“Whoa!” Amy caught her before she could crash through a stile. “Don’ fall over… s’no Doctorr to pick y’up if ya fall.”
“I don’t nee-eed any Doctor to pick me up. I’ve got me.”
Amy burst into loud giggles again. “Tha’ –that sounds soooo dirty, Mels!”
Melody dusted herself off, dignified, but she still was swaying noticeably. “You are such a child, Amy.”
“I’m no child.” Amy suddenly stood up straight to her full new-found height, with a model-esque pose that looked similar to pictures of her from the future. “If you’rr a woman, so am I. I’m older’an you, aftrall.”
“Yeah.” Mels’ gaze was fixed on the ground.
Amy hooked her arm under hers. “Why so melanchololilly?”
Mels shook her head vehemently. “S’nothin’.”
“C’mon, tell me-”
“Nothing. Oh look. We’re ‘ome.”
“Are we? Whyyy, so we ah-rr, ah dee-clay-yurr!”
“Oh, stop wi’ Scarlett Wara already, the play was three months ago!”
Amy snickered, and Mels smiled, too, reluctantly.
“I be’er be off. You’ll be okay?”
Amy shrugged. “Eh. Aun’ Sharon’ll be pissed but wha’s new abou’ that.”
“Will you be’n too much trouble?” Despite her slurry voice, Mels looked anxious. “’S my fault. Shouldn’a dared you.”
“Oi! Amy Pond’s resssponsisble for Amy Pond’n no one else!”
“Neverrrtheless,” Mels enunciated admirably, “I fee-eel ressponsible for you.”
“You’rr such a mother, Mels.”
Immediately, Mels thrust her face in front of Amy’s. “You take that back this instant! I’m no’your mother! You are mine!”
The much-taller Scottish girl cowered. “Whoa, Mels-”
“I’m your child, Amy! You are the mother, I’m the child. Always, always, always! And never the other way round! Don’t you see?!”
Amy was wide-eyed. “Yeah. Yeah, I do. You’re the baby. I’m the mom. Gotcha.”
Mels leaned back and stared at her friend with a surly expression. Both the girls were speechless.
Then a loud burp burst forth from Mels’ lips.
Amy actually fell over in laughter and Mels nearly did, too. The front door opened instantly and a wide swathe of yellow light bathed the two drunk girls.
“Amelia? Is that you?”
“Who else?” Amy called from the long grass.
“Are you drunk, young lady?”
“She sure en’t sober!” Mels hooted.
“Melody Zuckers, you misbehaving delinquent, you stay away-”
“Oi!” Amy got to her feet unsteadily. “You stay away from my daughter!”
“For God’s sake, Amelia-”
“Go away, woman!”
With a glare and a disapproving sniff, Aunt Sharon withdrew.
Mels beamed. “Thanks, mum.”
Amy chuckled as she high-fived her. “I like it. Y’should call me that morr.” Then, with a floppy hand-wave, she turned and stumbled her way into her house.
Melody’s smile broke. “If you’d remember tomorrow, I would.” The door slammed shut and she slipped away into the shadows.
