TITLE: It Started On Karn
WORD COUNT: 387
RATING: PG
CHARACTERS: Sarah Jane Smith, the Doctor (3, 4, 10, 12)
WARNINGS: AU
SUMMARY: Over the years, things slowly dimmed. But it all started on Karn.
IT STARTED ON KARN
Back in the Doctor's third form, he met a young lady who would swiftly become more than a companion to him, the likes of which he would not find again until a fiery ginger some seven bodies later. She made such an impression on him that he introduced her differently than any others.
"This is Leela/Romana/Martha/Turlough/Jack. My companion," is how they would be introduced. But for her? "Have you met Sarah Jane Smith? She's my best friend."
One of their many adventures took them to a planet called Karn, home of the Sisterhood of the Flame. It was being menaced by a madman named Morbius, and Sarah rescued her best friend – the Doctor's fourth form – from the madman and the Sisterhood. In the melee, one of the sisters shot and blinded her temporarily.
She was, however, plagued by headaches after that and kept rubbing at her eyes. When the Doctor dropped her off at Edinburgh, she fully intended to get it looked at.
But good intentions fell by the wayside of one of the most extraordinarily busy lives on planet Earth, and Sarah Jane never did manage to bring that up with a doctor.
Over the intervening twenty-plus years, she gained a mechanical companion named K-9. And she kept more and more lights burning even as the world around her grew slightly greyer every year.
The Doctor blew back into her life in his tenth form, and though she didn't travel with him as she had when she was younger, they nonetheless picked their friendship up right where they left off. He gave her tools to help her, and her home of 13 Bannerman Road became a hub for lost aliens to find their way home – as well as a weirdness magnet.
Sarah Jane befriended teens, adopting two extraordinary ones. She became mentor, parent, friend, Earthbound assistant to the Doctor.
And all the while, things very slowly dimmed.
By 2012, her dimming world had become a flat grey-black.
So when the first of the Doctor's new regeneration cycle forms and his Impossible Girl companion came round, Sarah Jane could be completely forgiven for not recognising him until he shared a memory.
Since she could no longer look into his eyes and see the same soul shining out.
Since his best friend had gone blind.
END
