Title: 'Commodities'
Rating: G
Genre: Character Study/Introspection/Missing Scene
Word Count: 325
Pairings or Characters: The Master (Roberts version), Chang Lee
Spoilers: Takes place during the 1996 TV movie
Warnings: None
Summary: I can almost see the dollar signs swimming in his eyes.
The human called Chang Lee is staring enraptured at the gold dust I've given him. Seduced by its bright-yellow gleam, he's clearly trying to calculate its value, combined with the value of the remainder that I've promised him. Either he's falling far short of the mark, or else he's vastly overestimating. If I had to guess, I'd opt for the latter; greed tends to have that effect. I can almost see the dollar signs swimming in his eyes.
He's probably already fantasizing about how to spend it. Humans his age--he can't be much over eighteen or twenty--seem to like flash in this era. No doubt he's planning to spend a sizeable portion on some sort of sports car, something that will impress the first willing female he takes an interest in.
He's an idiot. Nobody with a shred of common sense would readily form an alliance with someone who's shown a willingness to threaten their lives, would they? No one possessing a respectable amount of functioning brain cells would swallow the pack of lies I've been telling. Not without a healthy application of hypnotism, at any rate.
This...this is almost too easy.
But there's a lot to be said for inferior mentalities. Yes, Chang's an idiot. But being an idiot makes him useful to me.
As long as he stops dawdling in moronic fascination over his reward and focusses on our plan.
All that glitters may not be gold. But nothing is quite so effective as gold when it comes to buying loyalty. It's a small price to pay, ultimately. A few handfuls of gold dust in exchange for the Doctor's body and remaining regenerations...along with his TARDIS...
Yes, that's a price I can easily afford.
Besides, I plan to take the gold back once Chang's outlived his usefulness. I love promises. They're so easy to break.
After all, one puny human life is practically without value; there are several far superior commodities to be had.
