Agreed. It worked so well with the Eleventh, too. He seemed to have a layer of... almost self-loathing, much closer to the surface than the other recent Doctors.

Oh, I so agree with you. The others have managed to scratch the surface; he seemed fairly buried within it. Just one of the many things I miss about Matt in the role.

Oh, that joy...that was probably his greatest quality! I could hug him when he got that way. :D
