Summary: I'm home. It's the unlikeliest thing in all the universe, but I've come home again.
I missed this place. The smell of the wind, the pull of its gravitation--minor differences that most people might not notice. Such subtle things are easy to take for granted.
But I notice. I remember. The differences are there.
I'm home. It's the unlikeliest thing in all the universe, but I've come home again.
Gallifrey. There aren't words for how I've missed it.
What I didn't miss was the way it was run. Mismanaged; that would be a better way of putting it. Ruled with an iron fist by a resurrected maniac who's surrounded himself with cowardly yes-men. Coasting on the fear his name stirs in his own people. Counting on his status as a Time Lord living legend to get the job done.
All hail Rassilon, Lord President of Gallifrey. All hail the almighty panjandrum.
No. Not anymore. Not if I have anything to say about it--and, after all that I've been through, I'd damn well better have something to say about it.
And I do. Trust me. I have plenty to say.
Rassilon's day was over long before I was born. They should never have reawakened him. You know the old Earth cliché, Let sleeping dogs lie? It's just as true here. I just hope my people regretted waking the sleeping dog. I would have done.
Actually? I would have left him alone, to begin with. But that's just me. And I'm not exactly known for agreeing with my people, am I?
In the days of the Time War, Gallifrey needed a good, strong leader to see its people through. Someone who could take charge, and do what was right for everyone concerned.
That leader was not Rassilon.
Because the methods he uses, the tactics he employs...that's no way to run a planet. I could do a better job with both hands tied behind me, blindfolded, mute, and with both legs cut off at the thighs, aided solely by ventriloquists' dummies.
Right; that may have been a slight exaggeration. Doesn't matter. I still could have done a better job. Don't let this get about, but even the Master could have done a better job of running this world.
(For God's sake, don't tell Missy I said that; she'll never let me hear the end of it. Seriously; don't tell her. Never mind that she'll probably find out anyway. Let's just keep this between us for as long as we can. For whatever good it'll do.)
Sorry; where was I, again? Oh. Yes. Home. Home again, home again, jiggety-jig. There's trouble brewing; I can taste it on the air. Home is...not safe.
All the same, to a degree, it's good to be back. I missed my planet. But my planet needs fixing. Gallifrey needs healing.
Gallifrey needs a Doctor.
Good thing that's me, then.
