Summary: When Rory wanders into a Maternity Ward he learns a distubing fact about his duaghter's past.
It had been a particularly busy day for Rory and the files that he held weren’t very important to him but it was his turn to deliver them. After he dropped off the files, sighed, and decided to take a walk around the hospital, since nothing important was really happening. Somehow he had gotten down to the first floor and a door caught his eye. Rory didn't remember this part of the hospital. He slowly opened the heavy, brown door and looked inside. He stared into the Maternity Ward and as he looked around, he didn’t see anyone, anywhere. He made a mental note to report this to his head nurse. He sighed and decided to stay since no one else was here.
As he looked around he took in the different aspects of the room. There were about eight metal carts evenly spaced throughout the room and each one had a plastic bassinet on it with a baby laid inside. Rory looked around to find a clock and it read four o’clock. He sighed again and thought about the last hour of his shift. He longed to get home to Amy and relax in her embrace as he picked up a clipboard that contained information about the many infants.
Suddenly, there was a sharp wail from the end of the room. He frowned, letting go of the clipboard, and walked over to the end of the room. Rory realized that the baby was right next to a window which the sun blazed through. When he reached the window he shut the shades so that only a little bit of sun light got through, but this didn’t stop the baby from crying. Even when he shut the window completely the baby still wailed. When Rory looked at the child he grabbed the clipboard hanging at the end of the cart and pulled up a chair to sit next to the child. He knew instantly that it was a girl, not because of its pink blanket, but because of her light, brown hair that looked identical to River’s when she was a baby.
“Hey,” Rory said as he started to stroke her head. “It’s alright, you’re fine.”
The baby seemed to stop for a little bit but continued crying. Before Rory could stop himself he dropped the clipboard and picked up the little babe. Suddenly, the young child stopped crying and cooed at Rory.
“Now, that’s better, isn’t it?” Rory asked with a shy smile and stood up. He rocked her a little longer and since she was no longer crying he stooped down to put her back in her resting place. But the infant had other ideas and began howling to be held. Rory shook his head and smiled at his current situation. Swiftly, the child lifted its small hand and grabbed Rory’s large finger.
Rory marveled at the small child and remembered the one time he had held River and how his heart broke to hold her now. But he remembered how he had lost his little Melody on that same day. His conflicted mind cherished his brief time with her.
Suddenly, a wave of horror came over Rory as he thought about his time with River Song as a baby. He had never held his daughter. No, he had never held his real daughter. The only thing he had held was the ganger. Rory shuddered and out of nowhere, it felt like someone was squeezing his heart until it was nothing. He tried to hold back sobs but he couldn’t stop them from escaping. He slowly sat back down on his chair and wept softly. The baby again cooed at Rory but this time she added in a hint of inquiry.
But he couldn’t answer, River’s infancy had been without him completely. Shame and despair flooded into his whole body, crippling him. As he looked down at the child, old memories, bad memories intruded into his mind. Images of Amy screaming as she pulls the empty blanket, covered in a white, goopy liquid. Rory quickly placed the little girl back in her bed as he at which she started crying again, but he couldn’t take it. He couldn’t stand to hold her again, in fear of different memories that he had forgotten would come back.
“I can take it from here Nurse Williams, thank you for severance.” A Maternity Ward nurse said from behind him. He stared at the young child wailing, quickly handed her the clipboard, and hurried out of the Maternity Ward.
As Rory closed the door he pressed his back against the door, breathing hard. Before anyone could see his tear stained face his hand wiped them all away. As Rory composed himself he looked at his watch which read 5 o’clock. He thought to himself how long he had been in there. He let out a long sigh and walked away from the Maternity Ward. That was the only thing he could do. Walk away and bury his concern deep inside him where maybe even he couldn’t find them. He looked through the window into the Maternity Ward for the last time at young child still wailing and walked away … secretly screaming inside.

Date: 2016-01-15 04:46 pm (UTC)I always get a little sad when I re-watch the River Song story arch. The thought of Rory and Amy never really getting to raise an infant Melody is sad. And I came very close to crying when I was writing this.
Again, thank you for your comment!
