Setting: During the end of “The Girl in the Fireplace”
Summary: ““The first time I met him, his eyes showed me such wonder and curiosity which interested me. When I saw him next he saved me from my nightmares ….”Reinette and King Louis were walking down a beautiful garden path. It was a few months after the encounter with the disturbance. He had been trying for weeks to coax Reinette into telling him about her Lonely Angel since he had appeared. And she had finally given up.
“Please my love, who is this Lonely Angel you keep talking about?” King Louis pestered. “For weeks you have hidden this man from my knowledge. I do believe I have a right to know about him, do I not?”
“My Lord, he is my Lonely Angel that is all.” She answered.
“But he is a man and after he rescued you, he left without a trace. I have sent a thousand troops in every direction to find him. In the end they all come back with nothing.”
“My Lord, I have told you he travels to places beyond the sky itself. Your troops can never find him. He has promised to take me to the stars one day. He will come in his own time for he does not follow ours.”
King Louis stopped and sighed. Reinette, not knowing that the King stopped, walked a bit farther before stopping herself and looked back at him.
“My dear, do you fancy him?” He asked.
Reinette bit her lip, deciding what to stay. “At one point, yes I did. But that was a very long time ago.”
“When?”
“The first time I met him, his eyes showed me such wonder and curiosity which interested me. When I saw him next he saved me from my nightmares. My love has since grown stronger for my Lonely Angel who was shunned from his heaven .”
“M-my lady,” King Louis stumbled. “You mean to say, you have met him more than two times?”
“Of course my Lord. I have met exactly the same man five times before the disturbance arrived. One of which he was spying on me and thought I didn’t notice him.”
“Do you still love him?”
Reinette could tell that the King was worried and decided to ease his stress.
“No, he is but only a friend now.”
“But when did your love for him subside?”
“When I met that woman, her eyes told me he was hers and I never thought any more about it. Beside, though he was handsome, he has had a terrible past. Such a lonely childhood and has experienced such horrors we could never imagine. It’s like he’s been punished for his past sorrows by adding more sorrow.”
“What was his name? Not the name you call him, but his real name?”
“I know no other name than the Doctor.”
“The Doctor, such a fitting name for a man that has suffered such pain.”
“But that is the reason for his name. He is the Doctor so no one else may feel his pain.”
“But what of the pain that he has caused you, my wife?”
“He never meant to cause me pain, but to show me what life really is.”
Reinette looked up and gazed into the clear blue sky. King Louis sighed, took Reinette’s arm in his, and started walking back towards the Palace. She couldn’t wait till night fell so she could wait for her Lonely Angel to take her to see the stars, to see Heaven.
