Title: Crawling to the Rescue

Rating: G

Word Count: 469 words

Characters: The Twelfth Doctor

Spoilers: Heaven Sent, Season 9

Warnings: N/A

Episode Setting: End of Heaven Sent

Summary: It will be over soon, Clara. I will rescue you, I will save you.

As I sprinted through-out the castle I thought about everything I had encountered.  All the clues I had found started to slowly make sense ... again. The hints to what was really going on seem familiar. As I put all the pieces together I realized something.  I have done this before.  I remember what I have to do.  All those years. Thousands and thousands of years,  more like billions now. Punching away. My fist hurts just thinking about it.

Do I have to be strong this time?  Yes, I need to be strong.   If not for myself, for you, Clara. I have to save you.  I can do it for you.

I knew what was coming.  I now knew the cycle that would be repeating itself.  But for how long?  As I approached the diamond wall I raised my fist, hoping to break through. Harder and harder, I forced myself to go on. The diamond wall cut my hand but I kept pushing forward.

"How many seconds in eternity?" I gasped, "and the shepherd’s boy says, ‘There’s this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it and an hour to go around it, and every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain."

I paused a brief moment to catch my breath.  I knew I wouldn't have long but my body wouldn’t go on without it.

"And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.’ You may think that’s a hell of a long time. Personally-"

I was cut off by the Veil, sucking my life out of me. I wheezed for air as it laid its monstrous hands upon me. I felt empty and helpless.

Clara. Think of Clara.

Slowly, I made my dying body reach the door. Once opened I fell onto the sandy floor.

Clara. Clara.

Saying her name reminded me all I had to live for, even though I could no longer hear myself.

I am coming, I promised myself I will save her.

I slowly started crawling towards the teleport room, one inch at a time, never looking back. Even though my thoughts were no longer clear, I needed to finish.  I made my lifeless hand form the word "Bird" I crawled over and I attached myself to the machine ready to make another copy.

Clara, I am coming this time. I will not forget, I am coming!

As a pulled the lever completing the copy I fell onto the sand and the pain was too much to comprehend.

It will be over soon, Clara. I will rescue you, I will save you.

I told myself before slipping into this short lived death. But I knew I would be back, everything restored, for another cycle. The last one I hope.

Lovely job, and great characterization of Twelve in that moment, especially his fixation on Clara. Totally him. Fantastic! Thanks for entering the contest!

Oh wow, this was so powerful. I love the inclusion of the...parable/saying. It's so...perfectly metaphorical for the Doctor, his existence. Fabulous job!
