Title: Dressed for the Occasion
Rating: PG
Word Count: 938
Pairings or Characters: Eleven, River, Madam Kovarian
Warnings: Spoilers for "Closing Time" + "The Wedding of River Song"
Summary: River is made ready for her date with destiny, the Doctor looks cool. It turned out a bit more Kovarian focused than I thought it would.
"Tick Tock and all too soon your love will surely die," Madame Kovarian said in a sing song voice as River lost consciousness, the look of fear in her eyes was exquisite. She grinned and looked to the two Silents in their impeccable suits. They were dressed for a death. The most important death.
The final pieces of the plan were coming together so beautifully as The Silence knew they would.
Kovarian flicked through the Tardis-blue diary. Who would have thought the Doctor and the weapon made to kill him would turn out to be the best of friends? It was delicious. It was perfect.
The two Silents inspected the suit one last time. The one on the right inspected the helmet, checking the seal. It wouldn't do at all if after all this meticulous planning a broken seal drowned their weapon before it could be used.
Kovarian waited while they performed their checks. She looked at River. So peaceful. For the first time in a long time Kovarian considered her as person not as a weapon. She had lived, and would go on to live, the most extraordinary life. The diary was a testament to that. Despite her righteous purpose she had truely lived.
Kovarian felt a momentary twinge of jealousy. Where she had devoted her entire life to the cause she believed in the weapon itself had been living an extraordinary life. In a different universe, one where the Doctor had no destined arrival on the fields of Trenzalore, she might have longed for a life like River's.
But alas it was not to be. Such flighty thoughts were for those without a vital duty to protect the universe from the chaos of her enemy.
The story had been woven through time. A simple tale. One told in song and myth across the stars. The Doctor's death at a place and a time. The story was just dramatic enough to live on, passed through the ages. The astronaut. The death. The place. The Time. The woman. The Silents through their manipulation of human development had even given the place the perfect name: Lake Silencio.
The Silents brought her out of her thoughts by confirming that the suit was ready. It was time at last. Time to use their weapon and avert the coming disaster.
It was time to ensure that the oldest question was met with silence.

At the edge of the lake, on the beach where the Doctor would die, Kovarian and one of the Silents stood with River.
She was fully dressed for the occasion. The bulky spacesuit was keeping her upright despite her still being unconscious. She would wake soon. Kovarian checked the time. It was 1:05 pm. The sun was high in the flawless blue sky. It was a beautiful day for a beautiful act.
"It is time," the Silent growled, it was examining River's suit again.
"The weapons system is charged," Kovarian nodded. "Let's kill him at last," she laughed.
She brought down the helmet's visor, covering River's peaceful face. She stepped back and watched. The impossible astronaut started walking backwards towards the still waters of the lake, slow steady steps.
Kovarian was witnessing her belief and her life's work come true. Silence will fall when the question is asked. It was real. It was going to happen.
The astronaut reached the water and kept going. Kovarian and the Silent watched it slip beneath the water and disappear from view. In just under four hours the Doctor would be dead.
"Go. I will stay," the Silent said.
Kovarian nodded. As much as she would like to stay and watch the Doctor die she couldn't risk being seen. She couldn't risk being involved. This was a fixed point and it was best to keep it as simple as possible. Her presence might complicate things.
The Silent on the other hand would be forgotten the moment it was out of sight, making it the perfect witness to the glorious event.
β
The Doctor looked at himself in the mirror one last time.
He straightened his bow-tie and adjusted the stetson on his head. If he was going to die at least he was going to do it looking as absolutely cool as possible.
The invitations had gone out. In just a few minutes the Ponds would be here as requested. And River. Oh River. She would be here, and then she'd be here again to kill him. He knew the story. He knew what was going to happen. He'd spent his final day learning every detail, examining every angle.
He was ready for it.
βHe walked calmly to the Tardis door and opened it. He stepped out and closed the door behind him. The Tardis was invisible. He hopped onto the bonnet of the nearby car and smiled. He was looking forward to seeing Rory and Amy again. It had been two hundred years since he had spend any real time with them. His glimpse yesterday had made him all the more certain that he wanted them to be here for this.
He heard the bus. He looked round and saw it approaching.
The Doctor smiled.
β
Standing at the bottom of the lake in the suit River opened her eyes.
She was here. She was finally here. Of all her research into the Doctor's journeys through time and space one strand had stood out to her always. Lake Silencio, 22nd of April, 5:02pm. The day that so many stories named as the day the Doctor died.
Here she was about to do it.
Except no matter what happened River vowed one thing: She would never kill him. No matter what the cost, no matter what happened after, River was determined that she was going to rewrite the fixed point of the Doctor's death. No matter what the suit tried to make her do she wouldn't do it.
River Song couldn't. River Song wouldn't.
She loved him too much. The suit couldn't overcome that.

Date: 2011-10-15 06:24 am (UTC)Well written indeed! You've got Kovarian's coldness just right, and poor, poor River. Favourite line was Kovarian almost wishing she could have a life like River's - what a great insight into her.
Well done, and thank you.
