The Doctor stole a hesitant glance at his hand, the scarred mark still very visible. He stifled a sigh, he wouldn't make this all about him. Jenny strode along ahead of the Doctor and Donna, leading them as if she had been alive for more than a day.
As he observed her he came to realize she had his same gate, his same smile and enthusiasm, his same DNA.
He momentarily closed his eyes to just gather his thoughts. Here was this beautiful young woman that he brought into this world, but she wasn't the first. She wasn't the first kid he had to take care of, and all things considered she may not be the last.
Donna was chattering on, and while the Doctor was most certainly listening to her, he was also lost deep in thought.
As much as he wasn't prepared to be a father again, he couldn’t shake the ever growing feeling of an overwhelming sense of protection for her. This girl was so new to this world, he wanted to protect her from all the horrors of the universe, he wanted to show her what it's like to travel between the stars.
But he also saw something dark inside her. She was bred for war, and the thing that terrified the Doctor is the fact that he recognized that. For he was bred for war once too- and the weight he felt from that time still had a hold on his hearts.
Most times he tried not to think about his time as the War Doctor, because of regret, because of shame, name it what you will but that was one part of his life that he knew he could never run away from. And his new child, she was destination for the same fate as that if he let her continue on this path.
Donna’s voice cut through his thoughts like a knife, she was curious and he couldn’t blame her. They strode along through the damp hall and Donna continued to pepper him with questions. He would answer her, with some truth, but he didn’t want to talk now. If anything he wanted, it was to protect Jenny from herself.
Even just a little, he saw hope in her. If he could change and leave that person behind, she might too, and he had to be there to help her.
He had not even know her for a day and yet he knew he had to save her. But maybe it was more than just wanting to protect her, he also wanted to protect himself.
He had lost his family before, and there was no question that he would loose it again, could he live through that again? More heartbreak? Was all he was destined for was loneliness in the end?
No.
Even if he would loose his family, his friends, it wouldn’t stop him from having them now. A smile inched its way out onto his face as they ran off, ready to save the day.
