He doesn't understand.

Humans like warmth. They crave heat. People complain about being too hot at times, say they prefer the weather to be cool, but when it comes down to the facts, human bodies - not minds, for they can be edited or changed through opinion - are accustomed to seeking out temperatures that leak closer to their internal ones, rather than those that are much lower.

Time Lords do not care either way. As long as the air around them is clean, the actual temperature - if it is not in the extremes in either direction, of course - does not factor into their levels of comfort.

The Doctor considers that to be the reason as to why he never notices his cold hands. Touching his own flesh with his palms and fingers doesn't register as a shock, although the rest of his skin is usually warmer. Most of the time, he never considers there to be an actual significance in the truth that his hands are like ice.

But, when a human laces their hands with his own, the difference becomes apparent. The tingling of ice touching fire can not be avoided, nor can he not realise there is a distinct contrast when comparing his palm temperature to that of many friends.

It is a fact: no matter what, his hands are always colder than his companions'.

The logical part of his mind knows that this should make them prone to keeping their touch to themselves, and create a chore out of the action of hand holding. It should frustrate them, anger them, give them reason to be reluctant to allow physical contact.

That is not the case, though. Any and all of his companions make a habit of latching onto whichever of his hands is free at the time. Though the move should be repulsive to their bodies, make them want to flinch away without hesitation, that never happens. His companions hold his hands, always, even though they are cold.

Over his regenerations and personalities, this is but one of the conundrums about humans he has yet to make sense of. There is no logic to it.

He doesn't understand.
