Title: Anywhere, Anywhen
Author: Swan_Secrets
Rating: U
Word Count: 449
Summary: A companion discovers the possibilities
He was mad.
Brilliantly, utterly, ridiculously mad.
That wasn't even the best part about him. He had a time machine. But it was more than that. The marvelous machine could go anywhere, anywhen.
"Come aboard! Where shall we go?" he looked and me and gestured towards the controls with a flourish of his hand.
"It's so much bigger..."
"On the inside, yes!" He grinned. Oh how he grinned.
"Where can we go?" I asked. Oh if only I'd known at that moment just how vast the possibilities were. I was thinking maybe a hop a few hours into the future to dinnertime, or a trip to the moon. How small my thinking was then.
He stepped right up, gripped me by the shoulders and looked down at me, into my eyes. "Anywhere."
He turned and turned a dial and flipped a switch and suddenly there were noises. Wonderful, exciting noises.
"Open the door!" He pointed at the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension In Space, in case you were wondering) door, still grinning.
Tentatively I crossed the space to the door. There were faint vibrations coming through the floor. The machine around me seemed so...alive (I know now it is!). I took hold of the handle and opened.
I'd love to have seen the expression on my face. My eyes wide and mouth open like a buffon. In my defense I was looking down on my home planet from orbit, the glow of the beautiful world against a backdrop of stars, free of the veil of atmosphere I'd seen them through before.
It was beautiful.
And I started to get some sense of the possibilities before me.
"What do you think?" the voice behind me eager for reaction.
"It's brilliant."
"What do you think if I told you that's five thousand years ago?"
I looked around and he nodded, laughing at my expression.
Anywhere. Anywhen. There was so much. With this ship nothing impossible anymore. Everything changed that day. Everything. At that moment I knew this was my life. This moment. I wanted every moment to be this moment, beautiful and brilliant and full of possibilities.
We travelled a lot he and I, he said everything was better with a companion to share it with. He showed me the universe. He taught me how to live.
I was a boy then. I'm a man now. Calling myself The Doctor. But I still think of that day looking down on Gallifrey having a profound revelation.
In away all of this is down to him, my father, showing me the possibilities as a child.
Most importantly he taught me that with a companion the joy of exploring the possibilities was infinitely enhanced.
